Alternatives to Weight Loss Surgery

December 25th, 2010
V. Pearson asked:

Losing weight via surgery has become quite common these days even before exploring all of the other options out there. If we cut through the hype and salesmanship on the subject, it sure would make things a lot easier. But the truth is there are always alternatives to a weight loss surgery, that will help you lose excess weight fast, without under going painful and costly surgery.

To melt off the unwanted weight without any hard work or surgery, all you need to do is to change your eating habits or routine. Most people stuck in overweight bodies, considering surgeries, don’t realize that the cure lies at the base of the problem i.e. the reason why many of us gain weight is the consumption of undesired food products. We have very little real knowledge about what we put in our bodies. In this area knowledge is truly king!

Getting rid of unhealthy eating habits also cleanses your body system supporting weight loss protocol. Consuming fruits and vegetables along with lean protein does not just provide you with the essential ingredients, but also supports your body functions without adding any undesired weight. But if you don’t know what well marketed processed foods are doing to clog your system, fill you with parasites, yes, parasites, and prevent you from losing and keeping weight off. You will never stop the yo-yo weight gain/lose cycle.

So, if you are someone looking for alternatives to weight loss surgery, begin by doing some research on the truth about your diet. I have found a excellent source of this information in a easy to read (only-39 pages) and understand ebook by Dr. Susan Gudakunst. Before you let anyone do surgery on you, know all of your options. This Dr. is going against the grain with the information she is revealing. I found it very refreshing, I hope this article was helpful in your search for alternatives to weight loss surgery.

Why Do You Really Want Weight Loss Surgery?

December 4th, 2010
Steve Farmer asked:

Because weight loss surgery (WLS) is a life changing action it is important to understand why you are heading down this path. WLS is not an end all to your weight problems. In fact patients have been unsuccessful in reaching target weight loss or returned to their former weight after WLS.

It is important to understand that this procedure is just a tool to help you regain control over your life and your health. You will still need to change your eating habits for life. You will still need to change your exercise habits for life. WLS will not by itself change your self esteem, popularity, physical attractiveness, or other issues you may currently have as a result of your obesity.

Frequently your weight is only a symptom of other issues you will need to deal with in these areas.

WLS can help improve your overall health. Long term weight loss of 10% or less can result in a decrease in blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and help control blood sugar. In addition you may see improvements in sleep apnea, a lessening of pain in weight bearing joints like knees and ankles, and a general increase in your ability to breath.

Additional weight loss may also result in a decrease in heartburn and gastrointestinal discomfort. Many WLS patients have also reported decreased reliance, and sometimes total elimination of, the need for diabetes and blood pressure medications.

Can a Lap Band Be Removed?

October 14th, 2010
Dr. Jim Greene asked:

Many people who decide that they will under go a lap band procedure ask the same question. The question as to whether a lap band can be removed or not is in general no. This is not intended to be able to be removed for any reasons. The goal of it is to help the stomach shrink to a slimmer shape. This slimmer shape can only sustain it size if the lap band is in place. The moment the lap band is removed, the stomach is able to return back to its original shape.

The problem with your stomach returning to its original size and shape is that it will lead to regaining your original weight. Sometimes your weight can not only return, but it can also cause you to gain more weight than prior to the lap band being attached.

Just because the lap band is not supposed to be removed does not mean that it cannot be taken out. A surgical procedure known as laparoscopicy can take the lap band off, but the reasons for this procedure must be important as stated before the repercussions can be extreme.

The main goal for anyone who undergoes a lap band procedure is of course to loose weight. Fir this reason alone unless there is an absolute need to, it should never be removed from your stomach.

It is important to note that unlike many procedures that medical insurance will not cover, the lap band procedure may be covered by many insurance companies due to its lower costs and lowered associated risks. Please consult a physician about this procedure before you make any final decisions as you may have some underlying medical issues that may inhibit you ability to undergo the procedure.

There are many risks associated with the procedure and it is important that you as a potential patient research the subject fully to ensure that you can come to a well informed decision regarding the procedure itself. The surgeon will also have more information available to you upon request.
